When Should You Take a Home Pregnancy Test?

It’s natural to feel anxious if your period is late, or you’re experiencing some of the classic signs associated with early pregnancy. However, taking a pregnancy test right away may not give you the most accurate results. It is recommended that you wait at least one week after a missed period. It is at this point that there is enough of the pregnancy hormone (hCG) present to be detected by an over-the-counter urine pregnancy test. Taking the test too early is more likely to result in a false negative.
If I’m Pregnant, What’s Next?
If your test at Ivy Women’s Center comes back positive, your next step is a limited ultrasound. Ultrasounds reveal vital information about the pregnancy, such as the gestational age of the pregnancy, that will help determine what options are available to you. With up to 25 percent of pregnancies ending in natural miscarriage, an ultrasound can also prevent women from pursuing unnecessary procedures.

FAQs About Pregnancy Testing
How early can a pregnancy test detect pregnancy?
Pregnancy tests work by detecting the hormone hCG in your urine. While some tests claim early detection, results are typically most reliable after your period is late. If you’ve already taken a home test and aren’t sure about the result, our medical team can provide confirmation testing in a clinical setting.
Are the pregnancy tests at Ivy Women’s Center accurate?
Yes. All pregnancy tests at Ivy Women’s Center are medical-grade and administered by licensed medical professionals. Your appointment includes time to review your results, ask questions, and discuss any symptoms or concerns you may be experiencing.
Why is an ultrasound recommended after a positive pregnancy test?
A positive test confirms pregnancy hormones are present, but it does not show important medical details. A limited obstetric ultrasound can determine how far along the pregnancy is and confirm its location. This information can be important as you consider your next steps.
Is pregnancy testing at Ivy Women’s Center confidential and free?
Yes. Pregnancy testing and limited ultrasounds are provided at no cost in a professional medical setting. All services are confidential, and appointments are recommended to ensure privacy and dedicated time with our team in Mentor.
